Synopsis
“The Last Adam” begins in the Garden of Eden at the moment when Eve
is deceived by the serpent and tastes the forbidden fruit. She gives some
of the fruit to Adam who also tastes it and begins the fall of man. God finds
Adam and Eve hiding in the garden. He discovers that they have eaten from
the forbidden tree. He sings of His longing for them to be together again
but because of their sin it is impossible. God curses Adam and Eve and banishes
them from the garden forever.
God laments the loss of His relationship with mankind. He decides to send
one to restore it, a “Second Adam” who will also be the last.
But before He does, God sends a messenger to get things ready. John the Baptist
appears and tells the people, “Repent for the kingdom is at hand!” .
While John is talking to them Jesus appears and comes to be baptized. John
refuses at first but gradually comes to understand that this is God’s plan
for him. Jesus goes to his hometown of Nazareth and attends the synagogue.
The people demand to see a sign but Jesus refuses. Jesus leaves Nazareth and
begins to gather the twelve Apostles. They accompany him as he does many signs
and wonders throughout the land. While he is at the house of a Pharisee a
woman comes to see him. She anoints his feet with oil, much to the shock of
the Pharisees. Jesus tells her, “Your sins are forgiven,” which
changes her life. Jesus continues to change lives in all of Israel.
His fame grows among the people and they long to proclaim him Messiah as he rides
into Jerusalem. Not everyone is happy with Jesus’ popularity.
The chief priests and scribes plot how to get rid of him without causing a riot
. Jesus and his disciples celebrate their last meal together. Jesus
washes their feet and teaches them all to serve others. Jesus and the Disciples
go the garden to pray. It is there that Judas Iscariot betrays him to the
priests. Later, filled with remorse, Judas tries to undo what he has done.
After a quick trial Jesus is crucified. As he dies he prays, “Father,
forgive them!” His mother Mary stands at the cross with his Disciple
John. As he dies they sing a lament. Jesus is placed in the tomb of
Joseph. Mary Magdalene returns three days later to prepare the body but finds
it is missing. She is greeted by Jesus who tells her he is coming to see all
his Disciples. They meet together one last time on a mountaintop. There
Jesus gives them a commission to go into the entire world and make Disciples!
Jesus ascends to the Father as the Disciples sing.
